Sommer & Kohl are pleased to show Knut Henrik Henriksen's work Mick Crib, Aston Coin and Davies Compound meet Mr. Z as a tableau, 2008 as part of abc art berlin contemporary.
In his work, the Norwegian artist Knut Henrik Henriksen (*1970) often relates to architectural realities within an exhibition space. The size and shape of his sculptures are determined by the site. Using standard materials, Henriksen generates a kind of imprint of the architectural situation within a room, its angles and its history. For abc art berlin contemporary he also includes the viewer.
For the Postbahnhof am Gleisdreieck the artist has developed a four-part installation consisting of two styrofoam pillars, a bean bag filled with styrofoam pellets and an I-beam made out of cardboard.
One styrofoam pillar is attached 90° to the slightly sloping ceiling and disturbs so the vertical and horizontal lines within the space. The second styrofoam pillar is placed underneath a skylight. Mirror foil is attached to the upper third of this column, taking on the shape of the skylight's angles. Viewed from below, the pillar seems to disappear through the window into the sky. Adjacent to the two columns is a beanbag made from historic postal sacks, filled with styrofoam pellets, ready to take an imprint of the viewer's body. The I-beam refers to the angles in the skylight and acts as a tableau for the three other elements.
"Mick", "Aston" and "Davies" are three characters from The Caretaker, an absurd theatre play by Harold Pinter. Their "family names" "Crib", "Coin" and "Compound" were the titles of the exhibits in Carl Andre's exhibition at Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York in 1965, where he installed three sculptures made out of styrofoam elements. "Mr. Z" refers to the z-axis in the coordinate system X,Y and Z.
The project was kindly supported by Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation and the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin.
Knut Henrik Henriksen's works can be seen in the solo exhibition "Monuments of Doubts” at Hollybush Gardens, London, Great Britain (6.9.–5.10.08); in the group show "Paper, Scissors, Stone” at Galerie Nordenhake, Stockholm, Sweden (20.11.08 – January 2009) and from 29.11.08 in "Hans Arp/Knut Henrik Henriksen” at Galleri Würth, Nittendal, Norway.
